Ramesh Mayyappan is on the ropes

Ramesh Mayyappan up a rope - he is sitting holding the rope with his legs crossed in front of him.

Not many people can shimmy up a rope, give it a few twists and then sit – silent and poised. Ramesh Mayyappan can, and once there he can also create of what we, the audience, might see if we were up there too, within the world of his piece Skewered Snails.

Ramesh is a stunning mime – able to create magic with his hands, body and face. I’ve seen him many times, but always previously with both feet on the ground. Over the last two years Ramesh has been perfecting his ariel skills, specifically rope work, so he can now take his brand of physical theatre to new heights, literally.

We filmed him in the rehearsal room, with the rest of the company he is now working with to create his Unlimited commission. Here are just a few images to tease you with…

Ramesh is to the left of the shot, his arms out front showing two people moving apart. He is followed by a camera man and the director looks on.

A rehearsal room hung with ropes. Three actors are by the ropes at different heights (one on a table) - Ramesh, a sign interpreter and the director look on.

The heads and shoulders of three actors can be seen - as though they are looking though a window (they have created a bottom frame for the window by holding up a piece of rope).
